7 Everyday Habits That Keep Your Skin Healthier (According to Skin Professionals)

Healthy skin isn't created by expensive products alone. The choices you make every day have a tremendous impact on how your skin ages, heals, and protects itself.

At MoDerm Laser & Aesthetics in Calgary, we often meet clients who are surprised to learn that improving their skin starts with a few consistent daily habits. Whether you're interested in preventing wrinkles, maintaining an even complexion, or preparing for professional treatments like microneedling or laser procedures, these seven habits can make a noticeable difference.

1. Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day

If there is one habit dermatologists agree on, it's daily sun protection.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays contribute to:

  • Premature aging

  • Pigmentation

  • Fine lines

  • Broken capillaries

  • Loss of collagen

  • Increased skin cancer risk

Even on cloudy days, UV exposure reaches your skin. Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning is one of the simplest ways to preserve healthy skin.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration supports your body's natural ability to maintain healthy skin.

While drinking water won't erase wrinkles overnight, dehydration can make skin appear:

  • Dull

  • Tight

  • Less elastic

  • More prone to irritation

Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, especially during Calgary's dry winters.

3. Cleanse Without Overwashing

More cleansing isn't always better.

Overwashing can strip away your skin's natural protective barrier, leading to dryness and irritation.

A gentle cleanser used morning and evening is usually all that's needed for most skin types.

4. Eat Foods That Support Skin Health

Your skin reflects what's happening inside your body.

A diet rich in:

  • Colourful vegetables

  • Fruit

  • Lean protein

  • Healthy fats

  • Omega-3 fatty acids

helps provide the nutrients your skin needs for collagen production and repair.

Reducing excessive sugar may also help limit glycation, a process associated with accelerated skin aging.

5. Prioritize Sleep

During sleep, your body repairs damaged tissues—including your skin.

Poor sleep has been associated with:

  • Increased inflammation

  • Slower healing

  • Dull complexion

  • More noticeable fine lines

Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep whenever possible.

6. Don't Skip Moisturizer

Healthy skin requires a strong moisture barrier.

Moisturizers help:

  • Reduce water loss

  • Improve skin texture

  • Calm irritation

  • Support overall skin function

Choosing the right moisturizer depends on your skin type, but consistency is more important than complexity.

7. Consider Professional Skin Treatments

Even excellent home care has limits.

Professional treatments can address concerns that topical products simply cannot.

Depending on your goals, treatments may include:

  • Microneedling

  • Chemical peels

  • Laser treatments

  • Medical-grade facials

  • Pigmentation correction

These treatments stimulate collagen production, improve skin texture, and help maintain long-term skin health.

Healthy Skin Is Built One Day at a Time

There is no miracle product that replaces consistent habits.

Small daily choices—protecting your skin from the sun, eating well, staying hydrated, and using quality skincare—create healthier skin over time.

Professional treatments can then build on that healthy foundation to help you achieve even better results.

If you're unsure where to begin, our team at MoDerm Laser & Aesthetics can help you develop a personalized treatment plan based on your skin type, goals, and lifestyle.
